Lozol (Indapamide)
General information
Lozol is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention. It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), water retention (edema) due to congestive heart failure (CHF). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Decreasing extra salt and fluid in the body helps to decrease swelling and breathing problems from congestive heart failure and increases your ability to exercise.
Directions
Take Lozol exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended starting dose for high blood pressure is 1.25 mg once daily. Your doctor may increase your dose if necessary, up to a maximum of 5 mg per day. The recommended starting dose for water retention due to congestive heart failure is 2.5 mg once daily. If necessary, your doctor may increase your dose up to a maximum of 5 mg once daily. Take this medication by mouth with or without food. Because Lozol increases urination, it is best to take it in the morning.
Precautions
Before taking Lozol you should talk with your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, kidney failure, diabetes, gout, fluid or electrolyte problems, any allergies. This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Limit alcoholic beverages. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated.
Contraindications
You should not take Lozol if you are allergic to it, indapamide, or any inactive component of this medication, to sulfonamides, or if you have anuria. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have dizziness, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, sweating, unusual dry mouth, irregular heartbeat, decreased urination, rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, throat, hives, muscle pain or weakness. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: ACE inhibitors (lisinopril, captopril, ramipril, enalapril, benazepril), salicylates (aspirin), diabetes medicine, steroids (prednisone, hydrocortisone, prednisolone), blood pressure medications (verapamil, metoprolol, bumetanide, triamterene), lithium. Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are nausea, weakness, dizziness, dry mouth, thirst, muscle pain, weakness.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
